Praise The Lord and Pass The Blame Onto People You Want Everyone To Hate And Fear

 

I have just spent almost 2 years in the not quite loving embrace of an Evangelical Sect of CHRISTIANS who have a thoroughly bizarre idea of the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. They have left me with the jaundiced view that Evangelical CHRISTIANS would not recognize Jesus if they fell over him and that they only mouth the teachings of Jesus while actually worshiping the dark powers of evil because they can't get a sentence out without warning of "The End Times" and "Satan" and "Demons".

These sleazy CHRISTIAN snake oil salesmen and their imbecile followers are so in heat for the end of their god's creation that they are blind to the fact that wanting their god's creation to end is, itself, an insult to their god.

This weekend a tropical storm née hurricane has come up along the east coast of the United States. It has wrecked some serious destruction and death as far inland as Tennessee, an important link on The Bible Belt and the state that, nearly a century ago, prosecuted John T. Scopes for teaching Darwinian Evolution in a public school. And, no, the good people of Tennessee haven't moved far from that benighted act since.

The death and destruction wrought upon the good, god-fearing folks of Tennessee by a mindless and random wind and rain storm caused by equally mindless and random phenomena in the South Atlantic and Caribbean plus man-made climate change will, no doubt be blamed on Democrats, Antifa, Chinese Weather Control Machines, LGBTQ+ Rights Movements, Black Lives Matter, Abortions, Satan Worship by Democrats and Liberal Elites, and so on, etc., ad infinitum. Blah-Blah-Blah and also on unCHRISTIAN behavior by anyone that a bunch of neo-fascist demagogues masquerading as preachers and prophets happens to desire to personally gin up hate towards at this moment in time.

Hint: If some self-appointed preacher calls himself a prophet and claims that his god speaks to him directly, he's lying like a rug.

It's all sad and predictable because these demagogues who loudly proclaim their CHRISTIANITY aren't anything like the Jesus we find in the Gospels. 

Hint: If someone has to repeatedly report that they are a CHRISTIAN (not just a Christian), then they are certainly lying to you and to themselves as well

Let's be frank here. No one knows what any god wants for our world, for good or ill. We have more than enough nasty, vile people who are our neighbors and fellow congregants that satan, demons and all supernatural evils are simply unnecessary, regardless of what movie special effects show us. Some of the most worthless activities that human beings have ever engaged in are searching and finely sifting through their holy books of all types and faiths for "God's Plan". If some god had a plan don't you think he would have set it out so that even the dullest, most benighted dunces among us (e. g. self-appointed preachers and prophets) could figure it out? Actually, it is spelled out clearly and specifically in most holy books which is why I would refer you, dear reader, (I'm sure that there's, at most, one of you) the 25th Chapter of the Gospel According to Matthew in the Christian Bible where we are told that "I was naked and you clothed me, hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me drink, sick or in prison and you visited me, And for as much as you have done this to one another, you have done it unto me, your god." That's simple and direct. It does not require numerology, secret codes in the text or calculations that always prove to be wrong. It simply says be good to one another and you'll do what your god wants you to do.

After my 2 year CHRISTIALONIAN Captivity, I have found myself in the cool, green, decent pastures of secularists who seem to have taken that Sermon on the Mount to heart. They are humanitarians who think that helping their fellows is a good thing in and of itself. They have done away with cartloads of strictures about what a big, imaginary friend in the sky (thank you for that George Carlin) imposes and decided that treating other human beings as we would wish to be treated ( e. g. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.) is a pretty good way of getting along with others in this world.

Americas Evangelical movement has been taken over by charlatans who claim that they know what a god who exists nowhere outside the mind of man wants for all mankind. In fact, they know only what they want (i. e. your cash) and ways to keep you in fear and ignorance in order to keep that cash flowing. They have given Christianity a bad name. These heirs to Simon Magus like Jim Bakker, Pat Robertson, Creflo Dollar, James Dobson, Ralph Reed and their ilk trade on the name of a good man and great teacher named Jesus of Nazareth to fleece the foolish and unwary of cash and property while selling the snake oil of sedition, fear and hatred. 

I have noted before that Dr. Samuel Johnson in his Dictionary of 1753 defined "Patriotism" as "the last refuge of a scoundrel." More than a century later, the American writer and satirist, Ambrose Bierce, in his "Devil's Dictionary" noted that "Patriotism" is the first refuge of scoundrels. So what is the last and best refuge of a scoundrel? Why religion, of course! It's largely tax free, protected by our Constitution and largely immune from prosecution. If you doubt me on the immunity from prosecution part, I suggest that you check out the decades of immunity that child abusing Roman Catholic priests secured and Mr. Bakker's short prison sentence for fraud.

If a scam artist cajoles an elderly widow into giving him her house, be that scam artist a stranger or the woman's child, the scammer can be prosecuted. If, on the other hand, the scam artist is a preacher who gets this same elderly widow to turn over her property and live in a shelter for the homeless or a cardboard box under an overpass, that is the protected work of the lord. The veneer of religiosity is all that separates the 2 craven criminals.

Now, having excoriated Evangelicals let me point out that none of the world's religions (excepting only, Scientology, Jehovah's Witnesses and Christian Science) are inherently bad or evil. It is fanaticism that turns a humane course for living one's life into a horror of people who fly jet liners into buildings, shoot abortion doctors, beat up and kill people of a different religion or sect, assault others of their faith who move their cars from one side of the street to the other on the sabbath or tears down the temple of one religion to build their own temple on that site. The fanatic picks and chooses the injunctions from his or her holy book and enforces that stricture on all and sundry around him or her. They brook no deviation from the narrow, blinkered view their personal prejudice confines them to. In doing so they explicitly violate those humane injunctions to show others the respect you wish to be shown. The fanatic is the worst apostate of his own religion.

Hint: If your big, imaginary friend in the sky (ibid. George Carlin) wrecks destruction for some actions carried out in far away places like New York, Los Angeles or San Francisco on his god-fearing, righteous flocks in the Bible Belt might it not be that your imaginary friend in the sky is actually angry at his god-fearing, righteous flocks? Maybe your just god ought to punish the people you say he's angry at rather than you who trust in the lord, don't you think? Except maybe he's angry at you for your behavior and smiles on those people you hate. Just saying.

You might want to think about that except that you wouldn't be Evangelical congregants if thinking were your forte. Just saying.

CROCODILE TEARS

 

During the 2020 election some adherents of the Republiscum Party have drawn back in horror at the actions of the Orange Führer and collected themselves into a sort of political kaffeklatsch called "The Lincoln Project". This Neo-Fascist Liberation Front is opposing the re-election of the Orange Führer in a fuddled flurry of regret and crocodile tears. They are the precise equivalent of Dr. Frankenstein recoiling in horror at the monster he has created. 

Many years ago one of my dearest and oldest friends had to put up with meetings her partner held with his friends to discuss Marxism and other Lefty ideologies over wine and snacks. She called them "The Bourgeoisie Liberation Front". Basically they were pretentious "Limousine Liberals" who couldn't afford a 10-year old Volkswagen Beetle but had hopes. The Lincoln Project recalls that to me because they seem to be the Neo-Fascist right wing's answer to that old group of chit-chatters.

Let me say at the outset that all opposition to the Orange Führer has been and will continue to be good opposition regardless of whence it comes. I applaud their advertising and interventions on behalf of the Orange Führer opponents. The enemy of my enemy is definitely my friend...through November 3, 2020. Yet while I am pleased to get in the proverbial bed with these folks I think a "bundling board" is necessary lest we get too close and I become infected with the syphilitic Neo-Fascism of which they are carriers.

As usual with these blog posts, let me take you on a brief and admittedly jaundiced (Because it's factual) view of history.

The Republican Party (they hadn't yet become scum) came together from four disparate groups following the election of 1852. In that log cabin in Ripon, Wisconsin were "free soil" westerners, abolitionists and representatives of the essentially defunct Whig Party.  Their candidate in the 1856 presidential election, John Charles Fremont, carried the Whig and free soil strongholds of New England, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa. He also carried New York despite New Yorker Millard Fillmore's candidacy that claimed only Maryland's electors. Fillmore, who had started his career in the bigoted, conspiracy drenched Anti-Masonic Party, was the candidate of the American Party. Democrat James Buchanan of Pennsylvania became president and perhaps our most ineffectual holder of that office. Once the American Party better known as the anti-immigrant, anti-Catholic and racist Know-Nothings showed an ability to win votes in the east and border states the nascent Republican Party quickly allied themselves with that rabble.

The rest is, as they say, history. Abraham Lincoln won the presidency with but 40% of the popular vote in 1860 yet he got us through our Civil War, preserved the Union, established that we were once and for all United states and ended all slavery within our nation. After his assassination in 1865, at the very moment of victory, the Republican Party began morphing into the Republiscum Party of today.

The Republican Party inherited from the defunct Whigs a tradition of putting forward candidates who were war heroes (some with thin claim to any heroism). In the aftermath of our Civil War Republican candidates for national office continuously "waved the bloody shirt" which, beside claiming wartime service and heroism, also pointed out that Democrats were not the Party that "saved the Union".

The other major result of the Civil War was an officer corps which started off as politically connected, gained the friendship, counsel and support of the business men who greatly profited from the war and ensuing Reconstruction, and who later advanced the veteran officers' post-war careers. This situation created a cadre of staunchly Republican, exceptionally wealthy men who always had ambitions to wield power and often had ambitions to front for that power as office holders. 

Not that ambition is an inherently bad thing or, contrary to the proverbial, that money is inherently evil. No insentient and insensible object is inherently evil though such objects do frequently bring out the evil in those who desire and accumulate them. Fighting to the death (usually someone else's) to keep increasing one's wealth, power and serve ever expanding ambitions, that is the very definition of evil. So it came about that cadre of staunch Republicans in the decades following the Civil War morphed inexorably from the Republican Party of Lincoln into the Republiscum Party of Mitch McConnell and the Orange Führer.

As the Republican Party morphs into a club for monied, elitist scum you get the violent suppression of voting and civil rights of Afro-Americans through segregation, Ku Klux Klan violence and "Jim Crow" Laws once the Republican Party turned their backs on the black folks they'd just fought to free, so that they might get Rutherford B. Hayes elected president in early 1877. You get the murderous suppression of workers' rights both with private armies of "Pinkerton Men" and with Federal troops in multiple cases and even the aerial bombing of strikers in the 1920s. You get often violent suppression of the rights of small farmers seeking fair prices for their goods and agricultural workers seeking fair wages on industrial farms. You get financial scandals involving government officials, major banks, public funds and massive corruption every 3 to 5 years and major Depressions about every 20 years. You get a political party that represents an ever diminishing portion of the population that seeks to stay in power by sowing fear, hatred and division between religious, ethnic, racial and economic groups with common interests in order to keep their opposition fragmented and weak. Throw in a generous helping of suppressing the voting rights of non-whites and you get, by 1920, The Republiscum Party.

Yes, I will admit that there have been individual bright spots in the Republiscum Party's record of darkness over the last century but all of them have flashed brightly only to be enveloped in darkness and amnesia. Robert M. LaFollette, Margaret Chase Smith, Millicent Fenwick, Elliot Richardson, William Ruckelshaus, Pete McCloskey and a number of others. Besides a love of their country and Constitution and a profound sense of decency the other thing that these Republicans, except Pete McClosky, have in common is that they are all dead.

The Republiscum Party has relentlessly moved to positions that would be familiar to the fascists of the 1920s and '30s, Benito Mussolini or Fransisco Franco. At the same time they have adopted the vilest tactics of the Nazi Party's rise in the 1928 to 1933 period. Take any speech on immigration by any Republiscum office holder over the last 20 years and substitute the word "Jew" for "immigrant" and you will find something entirely consistent with Brown Shirts goosestepping by torchlight at Nürnberg. Compare the tactics of Nazis in the Reichstag before the fall of the Weimar Republic with Mitch McConnell's tactics of obstruction since 2011 and you will find what I wish I could say is an uncanny correlation. A sizeable number of Republiscum supporters style themselves as "Patriots" in much the same way as a majority of evangelicals style themselves as "Christian" though in neither case do their alleged patriotism or Christianity relate in any substantive way to the tenets of our nation or the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.

From out of this noisome cesspool of fascism called the Republiscum Party now rise some "Never Trumpers" and newly annointed "Not Anymore Trumpers" like Jeff Flake and Ben Sass, Bill Kristol and George Will and the "Team" at The Lincoln Project. I am happy to find that there are members of the Republiscum Party who reject our Orange Führer. With any luck at all some or even all of them actually support our Constitution and have a modest belief in democracy though those qualities have been in drastically short supply amongst Republiscum for the last 60 years.

These are people who have polluted the airwaves with their right-wing screeds, who have worked to steal the 2000 election, which is, by the way, the only presidential election in the United States that has been stolen from its rightful winner since 1876, who have sewn the seeds that the Orange Führer has been reaping. To say that the Orange Führer is an aberration, something inconsistent with the Republiscum Party that has sought to ruin our nation and destroy democracy itself since the 1920s is to be blind to history and those in The Lincoln Project that have worked mightily to bring a neo-Nazi scum like the Orange Führer to power. These are the very people who have derided progressive taxation as an assault on enterprise when it is the very source for enterprise. These people in The Lincoln Project have promoted the insane theory that giving ever greater wealth to the few raises the standard of living for the many. They have promoted authoritarian approaches to policing, justice for and decency to the poor and middle classes setting the one against the other. They have sewn division of region against region, race against race, religion against religion and neighbor against neighbor for the sole purpose of fragmenting an electorate that might otherwise rise up against their failed and self-serving policies. They have promoted and enacted a militarization of local police forces turning those who should protect and serve all our citizens into an occupying army that murders the poor and minorities with impunity.

Now, at long last, when their vicious, anti-democratic policies have reached the goal for which they have worked so mightily to achieve, now they expect us to forget their rush toward totalitarian plutocracy has achieved its goal and a piddling, mewling sop to the democracy, in which they do not at all believe, will make us forgive all their fascism.

On leaving the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787, Benjamin Franklin supposedly answered a call from the crowd asking, "Do we have a republic or a monarchy?" by saying, "A republic if you can keep it." If we simply thank The Lincoln Project's founders and adherents and welcome these vipers back into the life of our nation we are not only failing to keep our republic but failing to deserve it as well.

THE HIGHEST STAKES EVER

Yes, we have reason to believe that Vladimir Putin's Russia manipulated the American election in 2016 to get Donald Trump into the White House. Yes, we have reason to believe that Donald J. Trump is an agent of the Russian government. However, Robert Mueller and other U. S. Attorneys are investigating those allegations and will have more definitive information for us in the near future. What is far more dangerous both for the long and short term survival of American Democracy is the current government shut-down. Please let me explain.

In the closing days of the 114th Congress in December, 2018 the U. S. Senate passed a funding bill that would have kept all Departments of the U. S. Government operating. The bill did not contain funding for a wall along the border with Mexico though it did significantly increase funding for security along the southern border. At that point the bill was going to receive a positive vote in the U. S. House of Representatives and Donald Trump was set to sign the bill.

However, at that very point the American Volkishe Biobachter, Fox News, and the most strident of the neo-Fascists including Rash Lamebrain and the odious Ann Coulter latched onto the absence of wall funding. They made an issue of it by insinuating that Trump was impotent if he didn't insist on his wall. With his fragile virility on the line Trump stated that he couldn't sign the bill in its current form and the spineless Speaker Paul Ryan never brought the funding bill up for a floor vote.

We are now in the fourth week of a shut-down of most government services with even essential services suffering all because of a border wall that no one believes will be effective in reducing the number of immigrants coming to the United States, reducing drug trafficking across that border or any of the other wholly fictional or largely counterfactual horrors Trump claims a wall will counter.

The argument is simply over whether a U. S. President must always get his way or not regardless of the effectiveness of the thing the President wants. The corollary to that is that the legislative branch of government must always yield to the whims of the executive.

If Congressional Leaders accede to Trumps bullying demands we have destroyed our democracy. We have a three branch government established by a Constitution to balance and check the excesses of each branch. The executive branch executes the laws passed by the legislative branch and spends the money that the legislative branch appropriates for government activities. The judicial branch interprets the laws in the light of our Constitution as amended and determines whether those laws comport with one another and our stated intentions. No president can deign the building of an outhouse let alone a wall lest it be authorized and funded by the Congress.

Over the last six decades in the shadow of thermonuclear destruction we have ceded many powers to presidents to act in the event of an emergency that renders the normal operations of government impossible. The powers ceded by Congress chiefly have to do with war and the conduct of war. The irrefutable fact is that we are not at war with Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador or any other Central or South American country. Should Congress cave to the whims of Donald Trump in this case it will set a precedent that cedes all power to an imperial president. Our democracy will effectively be over because there will be no checks on executive power any longer.

The Republiscum Party has relentlessly emerged like some vile, misshapen, eldritch deformity from the Republican Party of old to become America's neo-Fascist Party. They believe in nothing other than plutocrats and autocratic strong men or the straw men for autocratic strong men. If we are to remain a true Constitutional democracy we must never give an inch to this insane border wall and the unnecessary and pointless government shut-down that Donald J. Trump's frail ego has visited upon us. No less than our nation is at stake and that even before we deal with Russian intervention in our elections.

ONLY OUTLAWS WILL HAVE GUNS

I, Oliver Laurence North, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

That is  the oath that Oliver North swore both verbally and in writing when he entered the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland and, indeed except for a change of name, the oath which every Federal employee swears upon joining Federal service. Please note that those swearing this oath are swearing their allegiance to the Constitution of the United States. No one swears allegiance to a president, a flag, a senator, congressperson, or even Congress. Much less is there any reference to any religion or philosophy or political party. It is the Constitution of the United States to which we swear our allegiance, pledges to the flag not withstanding.

Yes, Oliver North swore that oath and then violated it. It is why Oliver Laurence North, the new president of the National Rifle Association is a traitor and a criminal, the very outlaw that the NRA for decades claimed to oppose having guns. By electing Oliver North to the presidency of the NRA that organization has finally acknowledged that their current management has no regard for the Constitution of the United States, the laws and traditions of the nation or anything but gun manufacturers' profits and neo-Fascist politics.

Let's look back at North's career to understand why he is a criminal and a traitor.

Before he left the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland North had already killed a fellow classmate in an auto accident. North served as a Second Lieutenant during the Vietnam War and received a number of decorations. He also appeared at the trial of Lance Corporal Randall Herrod four other soldiers accused in the murder of sixteen Vietnamese civilians in the village of San Thang. Thanks in part to North's efforts Herrod and one of the other private soldiers were acquitted of murder though three of the four under Herrod's command on that day were convicted.

Once his tour in Vietnam was over North became an instructor at the Marine training facility at Quantico, Virginia. With its proximity to Washington, D. C. and frequent visits by major political figures as well as his contacts with fellow Annapolis classmates and rabid anti-communism, North parlayed his career as an instructor into an appointment to the National Security Council under Ronald Reagan.

It was at the NSC that North received his appointment as Lieutenant Colonel and reached the infamous height of his career. Under National Security Advisors Robert McFarlane and John Poindexter and with the cooperation of CIA Director William Casey, North managed the secret and unlawful sale of arms to the Iranian government and appropriation of the cash proceeds to finance that vicious Contras of Nicaragua and the spill over of that conflict into El Salvador. North was famously a friend of Panamanian Dictator and drug smuggler, Manuel Noriega, who spent most of the time from his capture in 1991 until his death in 2017 in U. S., French and Panamanian jails for a variety of crimes including drug smuggling, fraud and various human rights violations including murder.

North escaped prison for his treason, obstruction of justice and documented lying to Congress through the aid of his many ultra-right wing and neo-Fascist pals as well as the good offices of the American Civil Liberties Union. He's gone on to attempt a political career and then settled down to live off the largess of Rupert Murdock and those other alt-right pals alluded to above. And now he's the president of the NRA. Is there any wonder that the NRA is now tainted by Russian Spy Maria Butina and questionable money flowing into the NRA's coffers and thence out to the political campaigns of a lot of neo-Fascist candidates including one Donald J. Trump? It seems that once a traitor, always a traitor. Once a funneler of dark money, always a crook. The fact that the outlaw North is the figurehead for the organization making sure that outlaws have guns is just too ironic and delicious to let pass without comment.

This fanatic ideologue, North, who betrayed his oath of office, betrayed the Constitution and his nation has no criminal conviction on his record yet the absence of a conviction does not expunge the crimes against the United States that he committed. Thousands of people nationwide now have the voting rights withheld because they were convicted of felonies of infinitely less consequence than the treasonous acts of Oliver North but North, having escaped prison on a technicality is a darling of the neo-Fascist right and is now the president of the National Rifle Association. It seems perfectly consonant with the election of North, no fan of American democracy, that the NRA is now being investigated for ties to the Russian government and its attempts to undermine American democracy.

I am not opposed to firearms ownership. I was once a member of the National Rifle Association. I joined in the early 1970s. I was a gun owner with a small collection of replica black powder and more modern cartridge weapons.In 1977 when the neo-fascist lunatics led by Wayne LaPierre among others took over the NRA I dropped my membership rather than be associated with their misinterpretation of the Second Amendment and ultra-right wing politics. The idea that even my small annual dues might finance a legislative program and a political philosophy that was anathema to me was something I could not brook.

Let me be clear here. I believe that there is a right to keep and bear arms...for self-protection, for hunting, target shooting, trap (clay target) shooting and similar sports. I believe that the National Guard and similar official units such as police forces have a right to keep and bear military style weapons but I think that the weapons available for personal protection and those used by sport shooter and those used by the military and police are and should be different. The former group has no need of weapons similar to the AR-15 or AK-47 designed for military use and that, in fact, those weapons are completely unsuitable for home defense or hunting. The NRA, on the other hand, shilling for the gun manufacturing industry, promotes such weapons despite their unsuitability.

Let's consider that issue of suitability for home defense and hunting for a moment. Following the murder  of twenty-seven very young children at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012 Vice-President Joe Biden was roundly derided for suggesting that a shotgun was a preferable weapon for home defense to any assault rifle. No one managed to point out that pre-1977 articles in the NRA's magazine, The American Rifleman, and other gun sports magazines had promoted shotguns as the optimal home defense weapon. I have written in detail about this in a now lost post so let me briefly explain the logic here again.

We have all heard of children and adults wounded or killed inside a home during a drive-by shooting whose target was someone out on a sidewalk in front of the home. People inside a house get killed or wounded as collateral damage because the high energy bullets from an assault rifle or high-powered handgun penetrate the siding, insulation and interior wallboard of the house with enough energy to kill or wound. Most shotgun pellets, on the other hand, have significantly lower energy and are more easily stopped or slowed to less lethal force by intervening obstacles. So let's consider a home owner roused in the night by the noise of an invader in his or her home. The homeowner wakes, bleary, uncertain of time or what's going on. This homeowner may have to find glasses, decide whether or not to turn on a light (don't) and then retrieve a weapon. In the dim light and uncertain situation the homeowner is as likely to shoot a child up for a drink of water as a violent intruder. Still, we will suppose that the children are still in bed across the hall.

So the homeowner is awakened by an intruder in the house. He hears through his sleep some odd sound and is suddenly awake. First let's consider "suddenly awake". I have been awakened by odd noises in the night. I have to fumble for my glasses, put them on and blink a few times or wipe my eyes to get anything like clear vision. I have to get out of bed. If there's an intruder on the stairs or in the hall I need to be as quiet as possible. I don't want to turn on a light because my eyes, adjusted now to the darkness, are going to be momentarily blinded by any light source, a light source that could signal the intruder to either flee or take some violent action. I will not know which until one or the other actually happens so keeping the light off gives me something of an advantage.

If I have a handgun or an assault rifle, I need to be sure of my target but can I be in the darkness and confusion of my sudden waking? Have I managed to get my glasses on or my vision cleared when a figure looms in the bedroom doorway? If I aim and miss the high energy bullet from my handgun or rifle is going to travel until it hits something substantial enough to stop it's flight. In most homes built since the 1950s the walls are going to be wood or metal framing covered with sheet rock and filled with insulation of one sort or another. Unless the bullet hits a wood or metal frame member, it is unlikely to lose enough energy to stop or even be significantly slowed. You have a significant chance of killing the child or other relative sleeping in the room across the hall with your miss with that single bullet. In a worst case scenario your stray bullet might even manage to kill or wound a neighbor in the next house.

Now you may say, "I'm an excellent shot. I keep my cool in stressful situations. I'll get the bad guy." I'm sure that you think so but we are not in an ideal situation and, given all the deficits in the scenario, all your preparation and composure may be insufficient. So let's consider an alternative.

Let's say that you have a shotgun and let's suppose that you have loaded it using some foresight. The first shell to fire is full of number 6 bird shot and the second shell contains 00 Buckshot. You see the intruder and fire the first barrel or shell and the 394 .106 diameter #6 pellets from your 1¼ ounce load in your 3 inch shot shell. Those pellets spread out rapidly forming a wide wall many of which will hit your intruder unless your estimate of your aiming skills are exceptionally overrated. Your chance of 1 of 394 pellets hitting your target is greatly increased as is the likelihood of many pellets hitting the intruder. Unless this person is seriously trying to kill you or insane, the intruder is likely to think better of this intrusion and get the hell out of your home at this point. However, if he doesn't leave you have a second shell loaded with 10 .33 diameter 00 (pronounced Double Ought) Buckshot pellets, a blast that is likely to rip your intruder apart.

But aren't a lot of those many pellets going to miss and go flying across the hall? Many of them will miss, especially the #6 pellets but the energy of those pellets is low enough that they are likely to be stopped by 2 or 3 layers of sheet rock plus insulation. Your family members or guests in your home are far less likely to be killed or injured by lower energy shotgun pellets than by high energy bullets from rifles or handguns. Even the much higher energy buckshot is likely to be stopped or rendered relatively harmless by all the intervening materials through which the pellets would pass before reaching someone in another room.

So why does the NRA promote assault rifles for home defense if they are not ideal and liable to kill or injure unintended targets? Because the NRA was taken over in 1977 by a group financed by ultra-right wing gun manufacturers who were primarily interested in promoting their weapons. In 1977 the Vietnam War was lost. The demand for assault rifles was very low but manufacturers had lots of factory space committed to making parts for and assembling such rifles. Convincing the gun owning population that these were appropriate weapons for hunting and home defense meant that the assembly lines for AR-15s and the like could remain active. Editing out the reference to a "well-regulated militia" in the Second Amendment was also key to this nefarious plan. These fanatics knew that no one in the general population would bother to read the documents from the 1790s relative to the adoption to that amendment.

Corporations have the best lawyers that money can buy. Gun Manufacturing corporations like, Colt, Ruger, Remington and Winchester amongst others have the best and most craven lawyers that money can buy.  Of course those corporations don't have to buy the worst and most craven lawyers directly. They can funnel money through the NRA, Gun Owners of America, Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, the Second Amendment Foundation, the National Shooting Sports Foundation and the National Association for Gun Rights. They can even buy members of The Federalist Society and Judges like the late, but not late enough, In-Justice Antonin Scalia and current Supreme Court In-Justices like Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch.These bought and paid for shills for the firearms industry have managed to twist an amendment created in 1790 to protect the rights of states to maintain militias as a counter to excesses by a Federal standing army into an individual right to keep and bear arms which was never intended when the Bill of Rights was drafted.

For decades the NRA has promoted the bumper sticker slogan, "If guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns." Perhaps we now need a new bumper sticker. It should have a photo of North and the NRA seal with the slogan, "Guns aren't outlawed and now an outlaw has the NRA." Maybe throw in an image of Vladimir Putin applauding North too.

Newt and the Pope: Responsibility has been Shifted

So first there was this issue with sexual abuse of children by a number of Roman Catholic priests in the Boston Archdiocese over many decades but that was just a function of the decadent, permissive society in America. And anti-Catholic propaganda. Don't forget that any negative publicity about the behavior of the Church of Rome is always just anti-Catholic propaganda regardless of how true and accurate it may be.

Then it seems that the same thing happened in Canada and it even had implications for the government of Quebec because they lack total separation of church and state. But that was simply infection from the decadent, permissive society in America which didn't have adequate border controls to prevent French or other Canadian Catholics from independently abusing children. Just more anti-Catholic propaganda inspired from south of the Canadian border even though it mostly occurred before the first story about such abuse appeared in a U. S. newspaper.

Then, horror of horrors, the same behaviors showed up in Ireland. Ireland! Saints preserve us! The Americans have infected the people whose monasteries "saved civilization"! And those horrible anti-Catholics have infiltrated the Irish press too!

And then some German choirmaster named Ratzinger seems to have physically abused choirboys. And those anti-Catholic newspaper people, clearly non-Aryan, not echt Deutsch, and probably under the influence of the Elders of Zion have constructed the falsehood that this choirmaster is the brother of Pope Hitlerjugend I, alias Josef Ratzinger, Benedict XVI.

And worst of all, those decadent, permissive Americans have reared up again, this time in Wisconsin to put forward the obviously contumacious and defamatory charge that Pope Hitlerjugend I himself, as Cardinal Ratzinger, covered up the abuse of deaf children by a priest. These anti-Catholics have gone so far as to dress up some hired shill to pose as the retired Milwaukee Archbishop Rembert G. Weakland to falsely confirm the pope's involvement.

Clearly there is a vast conspiracy of Jews, atheists, Protestants, apostates and (fill in the name of the group that you, as a good Catholic, hate most here) to defame Pope Hitlerjugend I.

So, let me get this right. The Roman Catholic Church covered up sexual and physical abuse of children for decades. Any insinuation that the current pope while Archbishop and then Cardinal of the Munich Archdiocese may have known about the actions of priests, choirmasters or his own biological brothers is clearly defamatory. The current pope, whose portfolio as one of the most powerful cardinals in the Vatican at the time, was the ultimate Vatican official overseeing complaints such as those of the magnitude of the Wisconsin situation against priests had no knowledge of these cover ups. The current pope who, as cardinal, engineered the exit from the Boston Archdiocese to a sinecure in Rome far from the reach of American laws and victim lawsuits of Bernard, Cardinal Law was unaware of any of these egregious abuses. And it necessarily follows, as day follows night, that any doubts about Pope Hitlerjugend I's story are biased and unwarranted attacks on his office and the Roman Catholic Church.

We can't call this "blaming the victim" exactly because the Roman Church has avoided doing so. They leave that to various radical Catholic lay organizations for the sake of plausible deniability. However, it is certainly an absolute evasion of responsibility and a craven form of misdirection.

Simultaneously with this continuing tale of a Roman Catholic Church we have a very similar tale in American politics. Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich, perhaps the person who best typifies the cravenness, fraud, deception, vileness and lies what are the core of the Republican Party has gone the whole hog. Rather than taking the Vatican route of farming out blaming the victims of abuse, Newt has embraced that role himself.

The lunatics of the Tea Party Movement, whipped up to a frenzy by neo-fascists like of Michelle Bachmann, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Tom Tancredo, John Boehner and Mitch McConnell, started making threats against and vandalizing the offices of Congresspersons who voted for the Health Care Reform Bill. They sent envelopes of white powder (hopefully inert) to at least one Congressperson, Faxed and phoned in threats against not only the Representatives but against their families and even grandchildren, all for having the temerity to extend a basic right to health care to all Americans. At this juncture one might think that a group of cool-headed adults might step forward to discipline the out-of-control children before someone really gets hurt. Falsely presenting himself as such a grown-up, Newt came forward to insist that the Democrats who enacted the bill were responsible for the frenzy.

Of course! It should be obvious to everyone. The victims of the lunatics he and his cohorts have been whipping into a frenzy since November 4, 2008 were at fault because they weren't Newt. I expect that his excuse for his adulteries with his employees resulting in his second and third marriages had nothing to do with his ego or psychopathology but rather with the fact that wives 2 and 3 wore provocative clothing or gave signals that they wanted him to violate his marriage vows.

People listen to Newt, this neo-fascist scum bag, because of his position and the cash that ultra-rightist plutocrats keep funneling to him to keep him in the limelight. Yet ultimately he's in the same position as the current pope. Gingrich and Ratzinger are both attempting, through propaganda that might even give Josef Goebbles pause, to misdirect the focus from their own immoral, dishonest and, in some cases, criminal acts to save their own skins. Their standard enemies receive their blame because their egotistical self-absorption cannot admit of the least fallibility on their parts.

And, frankly, I am pleased, even ecstatic in both cases.

Newt and Pope Hitlerjugend I both are bent on the marginalization of their institutions. They are moving farther and farther into the ultra-fascist right both in political and religious doctrine. They reflexively excuse their worst followers while refusing to reform in ways that might gain them broader power. The scandals in the Church of Rome will continue to multiply and fester. Over 30 years of right wing popes have skewed the curia and the College of Cardinals toward fundamentalist hard liners making serious reform of the church all but impossible. The fanatics and con men that Rupert Murdock and Roger Ailes promote on Fox News along with scum like Newt Gingrich, John Bolten, Dick Cheney, Bill Kristol and the Tea Party lunatics are dragging the Republicans so far to the right that they can't even see the territory of Conservatism any longer. Even some of those who watch Fox News are inevitably going to find this extremism distasteful.

Within the Republican's corporate controlled hierarchy the purges have already begun. I have not the slightest mote of sympathy for David Frum. He's an amoral ideologue with no loyalty to anyone but the person who pays his bills. Still Frum's fate this week demonstrates that the Republican's circular firing squad has loosed its first volley. That he is, so far, the only one not to kowtow quickly enough to evade the whizzing bullets indicates the absence of anyone amongst the Republicans who isn't somewhere to the right of Benito Mussolini.

Senator John McCain, one of the very few Republicans who can fool people into thinking he's a moderate even after he opens his mouth, has claimed that Democrats will get even less cooperation from Republicans following the passage of Health Care Reform than they got before passage. How he figures that Democrats will have less than zero cooperation and even more unreasoning opposition I don't quite know but I'm sure that the neo-fascist opposition will figure it out. President Obama this week challenged the Republicans to "bring it on." I sincerely hope that they do.

If the Democrats are smart (always an iffy proposition) and emboldened (which they now are) their next legislative priority will be Senator Dodd's Banking Reform Bill. I eagerly await the spectacle of Republicans tying themselves in knots to defend their masters in the biggest banks.

The Tea Party Movement is an arranged marriage of ultra-rightists, the lunatic Libertarian fringe and some confused and worried people gullible enough to be suckered in by Republican fearmongering. Quite a substantial portion of those folks didn't like giving taxpayer money to big banks and investment houses that had just fleeced them of their retirement funds. Some will be dumb enough to stick with the right wingers but a substantial number are going to walk, run or just drift away as the Republicans insist that this isn't the right time or way to reform the banking system. The status quo in financial markets is a disaster for the small investors, homeowners, parents trying to save for a child's college education and middle-aged folks looking hard toward retirement. I fervently hope that the Republicans will defend that status quo. Such blocking of financial reform will dissolve the Tea Partiers leaving only the hardcore fully brainwashed by Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck. I only hope that the Democrats can time exposure of the Republican's suicide pact so that it falls after their lunatic fringe has picked slate after slate of unelectable ultra-rightists giving the Democrats say, 67 Senate seats and about 300 House members.

I wish I could say that I thought that the Roman Catholic Church could save itself. As an institution and as currently organized I wish it the same quick, dramatic, self-inflicted and painful demise I wish upon the Republican Party. Still it saddens me to say so because of the many, many decent, caring priests, nuns and brothers I have known to work and sacrifice for those in need of comfort and of the most basic needs for food, shelter, clothing and respect. I know that those people of sincere and deep religious calling are pained by and ashamed of the actions of their church hierarchy. Most are attached to their church in ways I respect even as I fail to understand them. Still I can feel that pain and shame and wish they did not have to go through it. I'm sure that they know far better than I that they are the source of any vitality in their church and sole hope for its survival if, it manages to survive rotting from both head and core. Pope Hitlerjugend I and his curia and College of Cardinals are the cancer that is killing their church just as Newt and his neo-fascists are the cancer killing the Republican Party.

Facing Satan

If we atheists didn't already have Pat Robertson we would have to invent him.

Actually, fundamentalism is the best thing that ever happened to atheism. It's far harder to rip apart a Prince of Peace or a god whose embodiment is love than it is to piss all over blinkered idiots whose god spouts war on unbelievers and hate generally. As I've written before here, fundamentalism is not religion; it's religiosity. That doesn't keep some of the people who are foolish or stupid enough to adhere to it from being pleasant generally and even decent under narrow circumstances. But narrow is the active word here.

I don't believe in either a Big-Imaginary-Friend-In-The-Sky or Satan. I believe that what good there is in the world comes primarily from people being kind and decent to one another in living this life as if it were the only one they will ever have (because I think it is). I also believe that the bulk of evil in this world - and there certainly is evil even without a satan - comes from people being hateful and selfish and narrow minded toward others while living this life as if it were a rehearsal gone wrong as they wait for some reward in another life that will never come.

But let's, for a moment, postulate  universe in which both that Big-Imaginary-Friend-In-The-Sky and Satan exist. If I were satan and wanted to drag as many fools to hell as possible, I can think of no better Pied Piper for the task than a neo-fascist hatemonger disguised as an avuncular fellow who professes himself to be a CHRISTIAN. You want proof? The 700 Club's name derives from the number of the Beast, 666, and Pat Robertson's official age in 1964, the year Barry Goldwater was defeated for the presidency and the year that Lyndon Johnson decided to make sure that Pat's father was defeated in his next senatorial campaign. That's right, folks, Robertson's own program identifies him as an agent of satan.

Want more proof? It's a "club", right? And what color are clubs in a pack of cards? Right! Clubs are black! And satan is the prince of darkness and darkness is black. It's right there in the name.

Ridiculous?

According to Pat Robertson today, January 13, 2009, "Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French ... and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you'll get us free from the French.' True story. And the devil said, 'OK, it's a deal,' . Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another."

How would Pat know it's a "true story"? He couldn't...unless he was there! He has admitted it. In 1804 Pat Robertson himself was in the meeting between the rebellious black slaves of Haiti and satan. Now, we know that Pat certainly is not black...of African descent, I mean. So if he's not a former Haitian slave that only leaves one other presence in the meeting...satan. There you are, boys and girls, proof positive or certainly good enough for Pat Robertson and Glenn Beck, that Robertson is, himself, satan and no other.

You want more proof?

Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and not because its people lack industriousness or invention. It is poor for a variety of reasons that range across the natural, personal and political spectrum over two centuries. Someone who controls such things must hate Haiti, right? But Jesus loved the poor. Jesus comforted the poor and afflicted so whoever is harming Haiti must be working counter to Jesus. And who is the adversary of everything CHRISTIAN and religiose?

Whoever said, "Richard Dawkins" should just close this blog now. You don't get it.

No, silly, it's satan again. Satan has visited on Haiti this massive earthquake. It killed the Archbishop of Port au Prince, didn't it? Or would Robertson say that's simply because he was a Catholic? I'm not sure on that one. Still, obviously this is satan's handiwork and satan himself, Pat Robertson, is trying to throw everyone off the track.

Or, perhaps we could look at things a little differently.

Isn't it possible that the Haitian slaves of the 18th and 19th Centuries felt that slavery was an injustice counter to every decent Christian religious principle? Isn't it possible that they were inspired by the revolutions in America and France to seek their freedom and independence? But then again, isn't that another proof that Pat Robertson is satan? After all, who but satan would ascribe to satan a yearning for freedom and independence? Or is it, perhaps, that Pat Robertson is really saying that in 1775 a group of delegates from colonies met in Philadelphia and made a pact with the devil. John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and the rest said to satan, "We will serve you if you will free us from the English." and the devil said, "It's a deal." Perhaps that is what Robertson is saying, after all, he was there. He would know.

Taking The Prize

In Richard Rhodes magisterial work The Making of the Atomic Bomb he recounts how the Nobel Prize committee was concerned for the safety of Italian physicist Enrico Fermi. Fermi’s wife, Laura, was Jewish and Fermi himself was no friend to Mussolini’s Fascist Regime. Members of the selection committee for the 1938 Physics prize made overtures in advance of the award to see if Fermi would be ready to leave Italy if the Nobel could get him and his family out to Stockholm and safety while providing them a financial buffer. Thanks to the award of that Nobel Prize in Physics the first controlled nuclear fission reaction happened in a squash court at the University of Chicago and not within the confines of Mussolini’s Italy or Hitler’s Germany.

That story came to my mind when I heard the announcement that President Barak Obama was the selected recipient of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

Since the award we have been subjected to cogitations by an array of fools, scum and thinkers opining on whether President Obama deserved the prize. Some have objected that there are groups working, often with little recognition, to promote peace in The Congo, Sudan, Liberia, Sierra Leone, the Horn of Africa generally and promoting democracy in China, Burma, Iran, Saudi Arabia and a raft of countries that once were part of the Soviet Union who might lay more claim to this prize. Others, mostly lurking in the neo-fascist shadows of Fox News, the Heritage Foundation and the Weekly Double Standard, have attempted to argue that Obama does not deserve the prize at all based on a thinly disguised version of the racist “it’s just affirmative action” farrago.

I am about as far from knowledge of what goes through the minds of the people who select the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize as one can get. Still that story about Fermi came to mind.

To those who consider themselves members of the political Left who object that President Obama has not yet closed the Concentration Camp at Guantanamo Bay, repudiated all of the odious acts of the previous Administration or withdrawn troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, let me point out that in 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt was awarded the Peace Prize for organizing and hosting the Portsmouth Conference that ended the Russo-Japanese War. At that same time Roosevelt was pursuing a genocidal war in the Philippines and bullying much of Central and South America.

America’s next Peace Prize winner, Elihu Root, was a staunch Republican from Clinton, New York who won the prize for his work in that bugaboo of the xenophobes and jingoists in his own party then as now, international law. Root won despite his record of support for Theodore Roosevelt’s worst imperialist tendencies and service to William McKinley in promoting the overtly imperialist Spanish-American War. In short both TR and Root won their prizes more in spite of their records promoting strife rather than their records of promoting peace.

But let’s go back to the story of Enrico Fermi’s prize in Physics. The Nobel Committee chose Fermi as much because of his future potential as for his past accomplishments and, most significantly, to demonstrate its opposition to Mussolini’s fascism and Hitler’s Nazism. Those wise men, whose formative experience had been the senseless and vicious World War I, now saw their world descending rapidly toward the horrors of World War II. Their practical motive was depriving the forces of fear and violence of a great mind whose genius might be forced to feed the fascist monsters’ military bloodlust. Their ideological motive was to demonstrate their opposition to fascism.

The faces of the committee members have changed many times in the last 71 years but the motive to oppose fascism has, I think, remained constant. I would suggest that the Nobel Peace Prize winners, particularly since 2001, have demonstrated the committee’s increasing fear of America’s descent into fascism.

In 2001, the prize went to Kofi Annan who had capped his service as Secretary General of the United Nations by opposing the Bush Administration’s imperialist militarism. In 2002, as the Bush Administration gear up for an unjustified, ill-planned and ill-executed war against Iraq, the prize went to former President Jimmy Carter for his 21 years of work toward world-wide democracy and peace. Carter, we should note, has been the neo-fascist’s whipping boy since the day of his inauguration and at no time more than during the Bush Administration. In 2005, as the Bush Administration ginned up nuclear fears for a third war against Iran, the prize committee chose Mohamed ElBaradei, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, in good part for his refutations of Bush propaganda. Then in 2007 the Peace prize went to Al Gore for his work in raising awareness of global climate change though no one could miss the rebuke in honoring the man from whom Bush and Cheney stole the 2000 presidential election.

And now we have the selection of President Obama. The president has accepted the prize with characteristic modesty and decency while the neo-fascists scream that he’s done nothing to deserve the prize. That, however, is only in their blinkered and clouded eyes.

Throughout most of the rest of the world Barak Obama has done many things from addressing the Arab-Israeli conflict in real terms to trying to mitigate the world-wide economic collapse created by American financial pirates. But his greatest achievement is neither his personal history, his understanding of Islam nor his skin color. President Obama has done enormous service to world peace simply by not being George W. Bush or, in fact, any other Republican. Just not being a representative of American fascism is to be worthy of the prize in the eyes of those beyond our borders.

And, I believe, the committee that chose him as the 2009 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize also had in mind another factor that may have moved them to significant haste. You see the Nobel Committee awards the prizes to living persons. I suspect that committee members may have worried that their time might be short. America’s reputation for violence and insanity, its racism, its senseless fetishizing of guns and its history of turning character assassination into actual assassination may have influenced the award while the committee had the chance.

The Nobel Committee, I’m sure, wishes President Obama well and long life just as I do. Yet I cannot but think that some members saw the news footage of neo-fascist lunatics bringing pistols and assault rifles to presidential appearances and thought those pictures a prelude to their worst fears for the President.

So I have to conclude that the award of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize to President Obama was both earned and timely. Earned by the simple fact of his presidency making the world a less dangerous place and timely because we do not know when the next Timothy McVeigh, Byron de la Beckwith or Eric Robert Rudolph incited by a Rush Limbaugh, James Dobson, Fred Phelps or Glenn Beck will target this good man.

If those considerations entered into the prize committee’s deliberations I am as ashamed for my country as I am proud for President Obama. I am glad he’s been awarded this honor. After eight years of wishing that my president could live up to even the lowest aspirations of my country I find myself in the position of hoping that my country will rise to the least of President Obama’s expectations for it. However, since this award, we seem to have been bent on demonstrating that Americans generally stand shoulder to shoelace with the president.
